How to convert military time to standard time

  1. For hours from 0000 to 1159, drop any leading zero and add AM. Example: 0905 → 9:05 AM.
  2. For hours from 1200 to 1259, it’s 12:MM PM. Example: 1230 → 12:30 PM.
  3. For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. Example: 1730 → 5:30 PM.

Reading four-digit military time

Military time is written as four digits without a colon. The first two digits are the hour (00–23), and the last two are minutes (00–59). For example, 1545 means 15 hours and 45 minutes, which is 3:45 PM.

Frequently asked questions

  • AM stands for ante meridiem (before noon) and PM stands for post meridiem (after noon). AM covers 12:00 AM–11:59 AM, PM covers 12:00 PM–11:59 PM. These are the common am pm times used on a 12‑hour clock.

  • PM runs from 12:00 PM (noon) to 11:59 PM. In 24‑hour time that’s 12:00 to 23:59. Example: 15:30 → 3:30 PM.

  • AM changes to PM at 12:00 PM (noon). 11:59 AM → 12:00 PM.

  • At midnight. 11:59 PM → 12:00 AM. In 24‑hour time, 23:59 → 00:00 of the next day.

  • AM hours are 12:00 AM–11:59 AM; PM hours are 12:00 PM–11:59 PM. In 24‑hour time, AM = 00:00–11:59 and PM = 12:00–23:59.

  • For 00:00–11:59 add AM (00:30 → 12:30 AM, 09:05 → 9:05 AM). For 12:00–12:59 use PM (12:10 → 12:10 PM). For 13:00–23:59 subtract 12 and add PM (18:45 → 6:45 PM).

  • 12 PM is noon; 12 AM is midnight. In 24‑hour time, noon = 12:00 and midnight = 00:00 (sometimes shown as 24:00 end‑of‑day).

  • An AM/PM clock uses 1–12 twice per day with AM/PM. A 24‑hour (military) clock counts 00–23 and needs no AM/PM. Both show the same moments in different notation.

  • 14:00 → 2:00 PM; 00:30 → 12:30 AM; 12:00 → 12:00 PM; 23:15 → 11:15 PM.

  • They refer to AM/PM hours in French and German. Many FR/DE contexts use 24‑hour time; ‘Uhr’ means ‘o’clock’. AM/PM maps the same as English: AM = 00:00–11:59, PM = 12:00–23:59.

  • Write AM/PM explicitly or use 24‑hour time to avoid ambiguity, especially around 12:00 and overnight ranges.

  • Remember: noon is 12 PM, midnight is 12 AM. For 13:00–23:59 subtract 12 and add PM; for 00:00–11:59 add AM.
